Three important highlights from FICEBO’s participation in the Annual Meeting of the Finnish Orthopaedic Association

This year's meeting took place in the iconic Finlandia House, (pictured above) designed by Alvar Aalto.
FICEBO was strongly represented throughout the scientific program, panel discussions, and collaboration meetings at this year's annual meeting of the Finnish Orthopaedic Association. Notable discussions with FICEBO members included:
1. What Every Orthopaedic Surgeon Should Know About Intimate Partner Violence
FICEBO’s Dr. Elisa Hackenberg delivered an impactful and widely appreciated talk titled “What Every Orthopaedic Surgeon Should Know About Intimate Partner Violence," where she underscored the critical role of orthopaedic surgeons and emergency care physicians in recognizing signs of interpersonal violence. Elisa highlighted practical, evidence-based approaches for initiating conversations, documenting findings, and ensuring patient safety, while avoiding common clinical pitfalls.
This was a timely reminder that orthopaedic clinics are often the first medical environments where victims present — and clinicians must not ignore these signals.

2. How to Read Science:What to Cheer and How to Spot Nonsense?
A lively panel discussion on scientific literacy featured Professor Teppo Järvinen and challenged attendees to look beyond titles, abstracts, and sensational claims. He encouraged the audience to:
- Recognize red flags in research methods and reporting
- Distinguish robust evidence from over interpretation
- Understand how bias and incentives shape scientific narratives
The session provided clinicians with a practical toolkit for navigating the ever-growing volume of published studies.

3. Incidence of OperativeTreatment for Lateral Malleolar Fractures in Six European Countries
Often variations in practice across different jurisdictions is a signal that many factors influence healthcare decision making. FICEBO researchers were represented in the core scientific program through a cross-national analysis of clinical practice variation.
Thomas Ibounig, Lasse Rämö, and Teppo Järvinen, delivered a presentation that examined the incidence of surgical management of isolated lateral malleolar fractures across six European countries.
The findings highlight striking differences in operational rates — illustrating that even within Europe, surgical decision-making is influenced as much by local custom as by evidence. (We will soon publish a separate FICEBO news post with full details.)
