FICEBO at PODC 2025 in Oxford

"I feel like I’m surrounded by much cleverer people than me…" This was the quiet observation made after the first three keynote lectures at PODC 2025, delivered by Teemu Karjalainen and Thomas Ibounig. The full implications of the"preventing overdiagnosis" movement had just exploded in our minds. The incredible lineup of speakers, including David Chambers, Elspeth Davies, Adam Cifu, and Carl Heneghan, really deepened our understanding of why and how overdiagnosis is such a complex issue in healthcare. Or maybe it was just the atmosphere of the historic Oxford University building, with its soaring arches, that made everything feel so profound.
PODC 2025in Oxford brought together researchers, clinicians, and policymakers from allover the globe to tackle the complex challenges of overdiagnosis and overtreatment in healthcare. The congress was packed with well-organized workshops and seminars that sparked lively discussions among attendees from a range of professions and countries. From the FICEBO group, Thomas Ibounig gave a standout oral presentation on the "Concordance of Shoulder Symptoms and Imaging Findings" – a protocol for the Finnish IMAGing of ShouldEr(FIMAGE) study.

While the days were filled with thought-provoking sessions, the national and international conversations continued late into the evening. And, of course, Oxford’s historical, or almost magical, setting made for some fantastic dinners with even more fantastic people.
For us first-timers, the congress really opened our eyes to the complexity of overuse in healthcare, with topics covering everything from commercialization and psychology to politics, culture, environmental issues, and even language. By the time the journey home began, our mental backpacks were definitely full!
