We are excited to introduce FINCATS, the Finnish Carpal Tunnel Study: a new clinical trial examining the effectiveness of carpal tunnel release surgery.

Carpal tunnel syndrome is one of the most common nerve compression conditions and can cause pain, numbness, tingling and reduced hand function. Surgery is commonly offered when symptoms persist, but there is still limited high-quality evidence on how much benefit the operation provides compared with other approaches.

FINCATS aims to address this important evidence gap. The study is the first placebo-surgery controlled randomized trial to evaluate open carpal tunnel release surgery. It will include 180 patients with confirmed carpal tunnel syndrome whose symptoms have continued despite nonoperative treatment.

Participants will receive either carpal tunnel release surgery or placebo surgery and will be followed to assess symptoms, pain, function, quality of life and possible complications. Alongside the randomized trial, FINCATS also includes an observational cohort.

Building on our team’s previous research and Cochrane reviews in carpal tunnel syndrome, FINCATS seeks to provide clearer evidence to support treatment decisions for patients and clinicians.
